University of Chichester - Film Studio and Media Centre

Project: Consultancy, technical design, system integration, installation and commissioning of new film and digital media facilities

Dates: October 2017 – November 2018

The University of Chichester’s landmark Tech Park project is a 300m2 film and TV studio including lighting grid and fittings, large-scale viewing and grading theatre with 4K projection and Dolby Atmos monitoring, dubbing suite, black box studio, green screen area, nine online edit suites and two further music production areas and control rooms. At its heart is an editing, storage and archiving requirement, within a fully digital production facility.

Our role, secured via competitive tender, was to design, procure, supply, install and support a complex, leading-edge solution that delivered best value for the University. We worked alongside architects, structural engineers, M&E Consultants, acoustic consultants and consortium partners VSC, consulting on all aspects of the new centre through the project design phase.

The solution delivered for this multi-faceted project was designed around Avid Media Central and Avid Nexis storage, and is the largest deployed in UK education to date.

We conducted detailed liaison with end users and University technical professionals, designing and specifying full network topology for the solution and a large-scale collaborative editing environment, with production asset management, nearline, archive and 4K uncompressed collaborative editing capabilities. We oversaw a complex installation and workflow design which required the involvement of a number of vendors, creating a detailed Bill of Materials covering all specialist technical facilities.

Our wiring and rigging teams began the initial first fix of 25km of wiring in April 2018. Off-site testing and commissioning of the shared storage and asset management solution began in June 2018, followed by the wiring of racks and patch bays on-site.

The project was subject to a comprehensive handover phase that included training and acceptance testing, and we are providing a comprehensive, ongoing servicing, maintenance and consultancy programme that will see the University secure the best long-term ROI for the whole project.

Digital Garage have responded and adapted incredibly well throughout our project, and since. They worked on several iterations of revised designs, adapting as project budgets became stretched out, and optimised. The outcomes are outstanding.
